Contemplation Pavilion

As of recently, Colombian architect Simon Velez has been looking to expand his structural method and explore new methods of usage for his “vegetal” steel. This led to the creation of the contemplation bamboo pavilion. The building’s genesis was a space of exhibition for photographer Matthieu Ricard. The structure was a “‘place of serenity’ propitious to discovery and contemplation; a corridor, a bridge between art [and architecture] and Matthieu Ricard’s spiritual commitments.”

It looked to create a place of coexistence between architecture, art, and spirituality. The structure used to create the space would reflect the lightness and darkness, the introspection and expression of the world that are embodied by the photographer’s work.

In conclusion, the structural system and the architectural concept of this pavilion is something we believe in. Its ability to be mobile, based on where the work is being exhibited allows for the structure to be experienced by many more than just those who can find their way to Arles, France. This openness to the world, and it’s clear coexistence with nature and the man-made is a concept that we believe is relevant and much needed in our time.
